«We share the concerns regarding a probable further strong increase in the price of a cup of coffee at the baran increase so far contained by the responsibility of Italian Public Establishments that are absorbing the very strong increases in blends caused by increases in prices at source. The climate crisis that has devastated crops in producing countries, Vietnam in particular, the geopolitical tensions that are changing traditional supply routes, the explosion of maritime freight rates, are the main causes that are determining the increases in prices at source on the London and New York commodity exchanges, with Arabica that has had increases of over 60% in one year and Robusta of over 90%. In these conditions, increases become inevitable, despite the attention, responsibility and interest of Public Establishments to protect the consumption of the cup of coffee, also a symbol of the identity and values of Italian sociality».
This is the comment of Lino Enrico Stoppanipresident of Fipe-Confcommercio on the subject of the increase in coffee prices, which «in recent days has been brought to the attention of the press through estimates that are sometimes inaccurate and far from reality». In this regard, Fipe notes that against an inflation rate of +16% between July 2021 and July 2024, prices in bars have increased by 13%. Even on the espresso cup increases are below inflation, continuing to keep the price among the lowest in Europe. Fipe also specifies that the official data on which the Federation’s analyses are based show increases at the level of individual cities that are considerably more contained than some estimates communicated to the press: the increase recorded, for example, in Bolzano, in fact, is equal to 6% over 2022 (12% over 2021), while in Pescara it is 13%. Finally, it should be noted that in the last 10 years the number of companies that carry out exclusively bar activities has decreased by over 22 thousand units.
