In recent days, at the Villa Fabiano Palace Hotel in Rende, one of the most authoritative Rai journalists on the national scene, Domenico Iannacone, enchanted the over 200 people present, in a meeting-debate organized by the Rende Rotary Club on the theme: “Ethics and Journalism”.
After the institutional greetings, the President and Secretary of the Rende Rotary Club, Sergio Mazzuca and Carlo Tansi, introduced the theme of the meeting-debate by tracing Iannacone’s human and professional traits.
During the evening, Iannacone, with a direct and passionate narration, recounted the various phases of his human and professional journey that led him to create journalism that respects the dignity of the interviewee, who looks to his soul. An approach light years away from “hit and run” journalism which often brutalizes, criminalizes and judges the interviewee, with verbal violence and prejudice, without respect for his dignity. After talking about the bond with his great friend Andrea Camilleri, who he considered his putative father, all the humanity and the human face of journalism came out according to Iannacone: with his Rai investigations, some of which were screened, he reported with an unprecedented and dazzling approach – without judgement, rhetoric, pietism or ideologies – the pain, violence, oppression or human weaknesses of those who suffer. The large audience was captivated, excited and at times moved by Iannacone’s narration, which transformed his investigations into an intimate space of reflection and denunciation, capable of photographing the hopes and frustrations of the entire nation.
An example of excellence and service journalism. “The most extraordinary stories are those that pass by us without us noticing. They are often so small that we have to go and look for them among the many things that are worth nothing”, said Iannacone, who reached the general television audience for having created and hosted Rai investigative programs such as “The ten commandments” and “What am I doing here”, among the most followed in-depth programs on RaiTre.
The journalist has won the Ilaria Alpi Prize five times, the most important Italian prize awarded to investigative journalism. He has received prestigious international awards: the Civis Media Prize in Berlin, the Real Screen Awards in Los Angeles and the Peace Jam Jury Awards in Monte Carlo. He won the Paolo Borsellino Award, the Goffredo Parise Award, the Baffo Rosso Award, the Franco Cuomo Award, the Kapuściński Award, the Moige Award and the Premiolino, one of the oldest and most authoritative awards dedicated to journalism. It won the Spello Film Festival.
The evening ended with a “Special Commendation for Lifetime Achievement” awarded by the Rende Rotary Club to Dr. Domenico Iannacone, represented by a work created and created by the master goldsmith Gerardo Sacco “for his original and enlightening way of doing journalism with a human face that looks to the soul”, who presented the award to the journalist.
