A political earthquake shakes the Sardinia region at the beginning of 2025.

There governor Alessandra Toddeelected last February with the broad center-left camp led by the PD-5 stars, risks forfeiture less than a year after taking officethe first woman to lead Sardinia and who immediately said she was serene and confident in the work of the judiciary. The Regional Electoral Guarantee Board of the Court of Appeal has issued a declaration of dismissal from the role of regional councilor for the M5s exponentwho would thus also lose the position of president of the Region.

The reason? After a long examination of the expenses incurred during the electoral campaign of the 5 Star Movement, non-compliances would have been detected which led to the issuing of an injunction order addressed to the Regional Council of Sardinia. Now the Sardinian assembly, chaired by the secretary of the Sardinian Democratic Party Piero Comandini, will have to establish a date for the decision on the dismissal of Alessandra Todde.

Therefore it is not at all obvious that the governor elected on 26 February 2024 with 45.3% of the preferences – exceeding the center-right candidate Paolo Truzzu (former mayor of Cagliari and exponent of Fratelli d’Italia by only 0.3 percentage points) will not will complete his five-year term.

The ball now passes to the Regional Council. Times could be long. What is certain is that in the event of forfeiture, we will return to the polls. But in the meantime Todde will remain at the helm of the regional council.
As required by law, the document notified today can be challenged in the ordinary court. And the same five-star governor immediately announced that she will do so: “The notification from the Court of Appeal – explains Alessandra Todde – is an administrative act which I will challenge in the appropriate forums. I have full faith in the judiciary”.

The solidarity of the secretary of the Christian Popular Union (UPC), Antonio Satta, immediately arrived. “Todde is right to have faith in the judiciary. It is the only way to clarify this matter – he underlines – because Sardinia needs government bodies in full swing of their functions. We on the centre-left do not believe in conspiracies, unlike the centre-right “.

The President of the Region, therefore, for the moment it remains in place. And he guarantees: “Since it is not a definitive provision, I will calmly continue to do my work in the interest of the Sardinian people”.
Work which in recent days has on the agenda a hot topic such as healthcare, which has been the subject of controversy between the parties on the island for several years now. The exponents of the broad camp had left on 31 December after the ad hoc majority summit with the issue identified as a priority on the table. Today the regional leadership of the Democratic Party met, entirely dedicated to the analysis of the proposals put forward by Todde herself to modify the text of the bill presented last August and still never discussed in the commission.

Commission which will meet on Wednesday 8th, with the hearing of the Health Councilor Armando Bartolazzi. Time is running out also because in the meantime the first month of provisional operation has begun, authorized by the Regional Council in the last meeting. For these reasons the governor announced that she wanted to move forward. But with the sword of Damocles of possible decadence. And of a sensational return to the polls.
