Except for the last hour surprises, there will be three candidates for the presidency of the Calabria Region in the elections scheduled for 5 and 6 October. I am Roberto Occhiuto, outgoing president, of the center -right; Pasquale Tridico, of the progressive field, and Francesco Toscano, supported by popular sovereign democracy, the party founded by the former parliamentarian of the Communist Refoundation March Rizzo.
The elections take place one year in advance of the natural deadline, which was set for 2026, due to the resignation of Occhiuto, announced on July 31 and then formalized. The lists that support Occhiuto are seven: Forza Italia, Brothers of Italy, Lega, Occhiuto President, Forza Azzurri, We moderate and UDC. Tridico is supported by the “progressive field” and for him the lists are six: Five Star Movement, Pd, Tridic President, Progressive Democrats, Green Green Alliance and Reformists’ House. For Francesco Toscano there is the support of the list of popular sovereign democracy.
It is predictable that for the presidency of the region the race is restricted between Occhiuto and Pasquale Tridico. Two candidates who boast a thick curriculum. Occhiuto, graduated in Economics, has been president of the Calabria Region since 2021. Since 2023 he has also been president of the Intermediate Commission (CIM). In 2024 he was elected vice national secretary of Forza Italia. Before being elected governor he was the leader of Forza Italia in the Chamber, of which he was a member since 2008.
Pasquale Tridico is European parliamentarian and head of delegation of the 5 Star Movement. He is an economist, full of economic policy at the Roma Tre University. From 2019 to 2023 he was president of INPS.
Francesco Toscano, graduated in law and lawyer, was Councilor for Culture of the Municipality of Gioia Tauro. He founded, together with the national coordinator Marco Rizzo, popular sovereign democracy. A topic that was at the center of the debate, in this first phase of the election campaign, with strong controversy, was the candidacy of the professor and philosopher Donatella di Cesare, criticized by the center -right for a social post then removed after the death of the brigatist Barbara Balzerani. For her, at first, there was talk of a commitment alongside Tridico. In recent days, it was she who announced that she had accepted the invitation to apply for the Green and Left Alliance. And with her the MILMMO LUCANO MILMMO MIMMO Lucano will be in the running.
