“I wish a good electoral campaign to all the candidates and to all the candidates of the lists that support the candidate Federico Basile. I reiterate that, for my part, there will be firmness in the positions, prompt and critical responses for the wrong choices. But always respecting the tone. Adversaries, but not enemies because Messina deserves a higher comparison”. Marcello Scurria, candidate of the centre-right, prefers to tone down the electoral campaign, after the controversies of recent days. “As regards the number of lists presented in support of Basile, I believe that it is not a test of strength, but a test of weakness. The “De Luca system” manifested itself with the recruitment of “those who were there before” and “white collar workers” who De Luca once said he was fighting politically. The “revolution” not only never existed, but has clearly become a system. I will remain in the area to listen to the citizens. Giving meaning to politics and to the candidatures does not mean for us fill the lists to make up the numbers”.

Carreri’s reply

However, the response from South Calls North came immediately, through the words of the city coordinator of South Calls North, Nino Carreri: «We read Marcello Scurria’s statements with some amazement. The civic candidate on the centre-right payroll appears rather confused. This double role, evidently, risks creating more than a few problems of political identity. Sometimes – continues Carreri – Scurria seems to forget that he is the candidate of a coalition made up of Forza Italia, Fratelli d’Italia, Lega, Noi Moderati, Genovese and DC. He’s the one who talks about “system”, when it is the expression of a coalition that has made a real political life choice out of the system and political malfeasance.”

«It would be enough to look at the facts, including the judicial ones which over the years have concerned various exponents of the centre-right in various capacities, to understand how paradoxical this attempt to set himself up as a champion of political purity sounds, after having supported the centre-right candidate Maurizio Croce in 2022, now known only for his judicial affairs».
Carreri also highlights the contradictions in the line adopted by the centre-right candidate: «When he speaks, Scurria seems to forget that he now speaks on behalf of a coalition. Or – and this is perhaps the only plausible explanation – he knows very well that he is left alone and can only speak for himself. The script is now clear: one day he launches accusations and poisons, the next day he exchanges the request for confrontation with unlikely duels to avoid the real debate and the following day he calls for lower tones, only to then attack even the candidates who, freely and with conviction, have chosen to support Federico Basile’s project as mayor. Scurria today allows himself to comment and judge our choices and our lists, while he is still alone and without any list to support him. It is precisely the case that from the Sun King there is only one King left. We understand that Federico Basile is scary – concludes Carreri – because he represents a city that has changed and wants to continue to change. The many lists that support this project are proof that more and more people are choosing to put their face to it. Evidently this is precisely what Scurria struggles to accept, now contaminated by the clientelism of a certain centre-right.”
