Elections in Messina, the DC’s choices become a political case: new De Luca-Scurria clash

Will the Christian Democracy, or in any case a substantial part of it, play the role that, in 2022, the League played with Nino Germanà? This time there are no serenades involved, but the DC’s choices risk becoming a coincidence, with the group referring to the city councilor Giovanni Caruso (there is talk of around twenty candidates) who would be about to support not the centre-right mayoral candidate, Marcello Scurria, but the one from the South calling for the North, Federico Basile. This would be one of the “spaghetti pacts” advertised by Cateno De Luca in recent days, even if Caruso himself, whom we consulted, chooses the path of prudence: “A provincial party leadership has been convened for Sunday – explains the councilor – and the line to follow in the next elections will be discussed”.
Caruso does not reveal more, but within the DC there are fibrillations and even some tension, to the point that the provincial secretary, Giovanni Frazzica, is said to have “suspended” from office the deputy, the former president of the city council Pippo Previti, who is apparently part of the wing of the party opposed to this operation. The issue has now exploded and yesterday Marcello Scurria came out into the open: «Today the prices on the political market – he said – say that Giovanni Caruso is going towards De Luca. Go, Giovanni, take it, De Luca! The purchasing campaign continues, the politics of the charlatans also, I continue to remain with the citizens, they will decide in May”.
On the other hand, Federico Basile, who on Thursday had “cashed in” on the return of councilor Sara Di Ciuccio from Forza Italia, remained silent. De Luca took it upon himself to speak: ««In the centre-right everyone is fleeing, I will have other meetings in the next few hours, of the nine lists praised at the moment they reach perhaps five. And all of them, except that of Fratelli d’Italia, are shaky. This is the Marcello Scurria effect, there are many discussions going on. Where are the centre-right deputies? We hear their silence.” An intervention that Scurria “dismissed” thus: «Enough with these morning shows, even quite ridiculous, full of lies, the citizens are tired. De Luca sings it and plays it.”
