The journey of the Olympic Flame towards Milan-Cortina 2026 also paid homage to the victims of the Cutro shipwreck. It happened at the end of the Crotone stage of the passage of the torch to Calabria, which left on 26 November from Olimpia and is destined to arrive in Milan, where on 6 February 2026 it will light the Olympic brazier.
The route in the city center
The journey through the streets of Crotone started from Palamilone, the sports hall dedicated to Milone, the greatest athlete of the ancient Olympics, capable of winning the Games seven times. The structure has become a symbol of the Cutro tragedy of 26 February 2023, having hosted the funeral home with the coffins of the 94 victims of the shipwreck.
There were fifteen torchbearers, also coming from Campania and Basilicata, who carried the Olympic torch into the city centre. The route also included a passage on the beach of Crotone, with the Capocolonna promontory, symbol of Magna Graecia, in the background.
The arrival at the Garden of Ali
Despite the pouring rain, numerous citizens took to the streets to applaud the passage of the symbol of the Olympics. The route ended at the Alì Garden, the green space at the entrance to the city that the Municipality of Crotone dedicated to the victims of the shipwreck, planting 94 trees.
All the torchbearers, together with the mayor of Crotone Vincenzo Voce, wanted to accompany the Olympic Flame, a symbol of peace and brotherhood, to the place that remembers the victims of that dramatic event.
