Pierre Gasly wins pole position at the Italian GP. On the Monza track, the Alpine driver finished ahead of everyone thanks to the last lap of qualifying, ahead of George Russell’s Mercedes. Penalty for Oscar Piastri, punished by the stewards for obstructing Liam Lawson in Q2. The McLaren driver loses three positions, so the Ferraris of Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton move onto the grid, starting third and fourth respectively, ahead of Verstappen in fifth place. Kimi Antonelli, leader of the World Championship, will instead start in twentieth position (he starts from the back of the grid due to having replaced engine components).
Gasly and the precedent of the victory in Monza
Born in Rouen on 7 February 1996, Gasly made his Formula 1 debut in 2017, at the Malaysian GP, with Toro Rosso. In 2019 he moved to Red Bull, alongside Max Verstappen, before returning to the Faenza team during the same season.
Precisely in Monza, on 6 September 2020, he won his first victory in Formula 1 at the wheel of AlphaTauri, bringing a French driver back to the top step of the podium 24 years after Olivier Panis’ success in Monte Carlo. GP2 champion in 2016, he has been racing for Alpine since 2023.
