Lando Norris on McLaren took pole position in the Mexican Grand Prix, the 20th round of the Formula 1 world championship. The British driver preceded the Ferraris of Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton, who finished second and third respectively. George Russell’s Mercedes is fourth, Max Verstappen’s Red Bull is fifth.
Only eighth time for the other McLaren of Oscar Piastri, the world leader, who however will start from seventh position due to the five-place penalty of Carlos Sainz’s Williams, seventh, following the accident in Austin with Kimi Antonelli.
After dominating free practice at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez, therefore, Norris achieved his fifth pole of the season with a time of 1’15″586 and now launches the challenge to Verstappen and his teammate Piastri. In the general classification after the Austin GP, Piastri (McLaren) is in command with 346 points, followed by his teammate Norris on 332 and by Max Verstappen (Red Bull) is back in the title race with his 306 points.
The Ferraris did very well: Charles Leclerc finished just 262 thousandths of a second, immediately ahead of Lewis Hamilton, third (+0.352). Sixth time for Andrea Kimi Antonelli.
In Q3 Leclerc was also in the lead but at the last attempt Norris put in a fantastic lap and placed himself in front of the reds
