It denounced the critical issues linked to the lack of waste water purification, initiated an administrative process to address the environmental emergency and obtained funding of 4.6 million euros from the Calabria Region for the refunctionalisation and strengthening of the purification system. Now, however, the mayor of Jonadi, Fabio Signoretta, will have to appear in court as part of a criminal proceeding relating to the management of purification in the municipal area. The first hearing is scheduled for March 2027 before the Court of Vibo Valentia. It was the mayor himself who made the indictment known and who reconstructed the story, retracing the initiatives launched after his inauguration on 12 June 2022.
“I reported the problem myself and today I find myself in the dock”
“I could easily have looked the other way, as had been done for years, and instead I chose to publicly denounce the situation, report it to all the competent authorities and talk about it transparently with my community” says Signoretta, explaining that he wanted to formally bring the critical issues encountered to the attention of the institutions. About three months after taking office, the Municipality approved a technical project to address the problem of pollution linked to wastewater. This was followed by reminders, institutional discussions and initiatives to obtain the necessary resources, until the intervention was included in regional planning, with an allocation of 4.6 million euros. “I reported the problem myself and today I find myself in the dock,” the mayor continued, contesting what he considers a paradox between the activity carried out to deal with the emergency and the ongoing criminal proceedings. Signoretta however reiterated his desire to defend himself in court, recalling the documentation relating to the initiatives undertaken by the administration. «I wouldn’t change a single comma of what I’ve done from June 12, 2022 to today. I don’t regret reporting what wasn’t working at all; if anything, I would have regretted having kept quiet about it”, he maintained, adding that he will continue the work to transform regional funding into concrete interventions.
