A phone call from an unknown number, the voice of a man who passes by lawyer and asks to collect all the money at home to “pay for the deposit” of the arrested daughter. It is the classic scheme of the fake carabiniere scam, the one in which an elderly from Polistena was about to fall in the Reggio area.
This time, however, the scammers – a man and a woman, both forty and of Campania origin – did not deal with the real carabinieri, already on their tracks.
Reporting and arrest
The two had attempted several shots during the day, contacting the elderly in several centers of the Piana di Gioia Tauro. A woman from Cittanova, who had followed an anti-stroke course organized by the weapon, recognized the scam and immediately called 112.
From video surveillance images, investigators identified the couple aboard a white car flee to the highway. Shortly thereafter, the traffic police intercepted them near Lamezia Terme.
Inside the vehicle were found cash and jewels just removed from one of the victims, including gold jewelry, which will be returned to the owners.
The accusations
The two were arrested on charges of robbery and scam. The investigating judge of Lamezia Terme validated the detention, arranging the precautionary custody in prison.
