On the day in which Catanzaro was hit by an unbearable tragedy, with the death of Emanuele Scafidi, 35 years old, and his girl Giorgia, just 7 years old, overwhelmed and killed on Viale Emilia, “the municipal administration has chosen not to stop. She chose to turn on the fireworks of the Lido district party, as if nothing had happened”.

To underline the incident is the regional councilor Antonello Talerico, who through a note enters the merits of an issue.

“The justification provided by the mayor Nicola Fiorita is simply unacceptable and offensive,” says Talerico. “There is talk of ‘procedures already started’, as if the fires were a planned device and not an event organized by people, with precise responsibilities, who could and had to be stopped with a single act of political will”.

Instead, the councilor continues, “the mayor preferred to indulge those who still wanted the party, who demanded that everything went on, who believed that the fun was worth more than mourning. Or – and it would be even worse – it remained simply indifferent”.

In both cases, the note concludes, “dignity was missing. There was no shortage of time to stop everything. The courage was missing. The possibility was not lacking. The will was missing. And this is a serious fault. A deep wound, inflicted not only in the memory of Emanuele and Giorgia, but in all Catanzaro”.
