Flood in Naso, damage counting. Mayor Nanì: “Unimaginable event”

The situation is slowly returning to normal in Ponte Naso hamletafter the fury of the rain that in the night between Sunday and Monday, brought so much fear, but above all damage and destruction. In the coastal area of ​​the Nebrodi municipality in Messina, a flow of water and mud came down the mountain, sweeping away everything in its path. “Even though we could have expected a lot of rain, after several months of drought – commented 48 hours after the event, the mayor of Naso Gaetano Nani – an extraordinary event like this was unimaginable: Over 100 millimetres of water fell in two hours. We are talking about a third of what we have had from January to today. However, the municipal emergency machine worked well, we were able to immediately provide help to the population, with the intervention of civil protection, the municipal police and volunteers”. Some families, whose homes were flooded and invaded by debris, were evacuated and assisted in settling with relatives. Furthermore, in a few hours, several important roads, partially or totally interrupted by landslides, were restored.. “The first interventions were carried out the same night, by the local companies Cuticchia and Merendino, under the direction of the architect Messina of the Utc – continues Nanì who personally followed all the operations -, since this morning we have been checking the situation of the places and carrying out an initial survey of the damage. I have already started discussions with the relevant regional offices, to arrive as soon as possible at the safety of the territory that is paying for the devastation caused by fires in past years, but also the neglect and abandonment of many lands, by the owners”.
