Bad weather forced the Global Sumud Flotilla to return to the port of Barcelona but the boats will make a new attempt to bring humanitarian aid to Gaza already this afternoon. This was reported by the Spanish newspaper El Pais, specifying that the storms that are hitting the north-eastern area of Spain forced the expedition to go back since last night, heading towards the port of Barcelona. The organization took advantage of what calls a “technical stop” to make the latest changes to the thirty boats that make up the flotilla. After starting at three in the afternoon yesterday, surrounded by a crowd that applauded the crew when his passage, the boats went to Tunis, where they should have arrived on September 4th.

However, after several hours of crossing against the waves, the organization decided to return to the port of Barcelona to guarantee safety, especially for smaller boats. All the boats arrived in port late on Sunday evening and the intention is to start again in the early afternoon today. «Due to the dangerous weather conditions, we took a test at sea and then we returned to the port to let the storm pass. This led to a delay in our departure to avoid complications with smaller boats, “underlined the organization. “In front of twenty of over 30 knots and the unpredictability of the Mediterranean, we made this decision to give priority to the safety and well -being of all participants and guarantee the success of our mission,” he added. The unexpected meteorological event forced the two floats that will join the coasts of Italy and Tunisia to modify their initial plans, delaying the departure of one day. Since 2008, about fifty floats have been sailed for Gaza, of which only the top five have managed to arrive. In 2010 the Freedom Flotilla movement was officially founded, which on this occasion was renamed Global Sumud Flotilla. The word Sumud translates from Arabic as “persistence or constant perseverance”, which is why they decided to give this nickname to this mission.

Oppositions to Meloni: “Heads Flotilla from Israel’s threats”

“The government protects the Global Sumud Flotilla.” The pressing request of the opposition comes a few hours after the threats of the Israeli Security Minister Ben Gvir: the activists aboard the boats directed to Gaza to “break the siege” will be treated by the Aviv authorities in the same way as terrorists. Therefore, imprisoned and detained without any special benefit. And this, of course, also applies to Italians.
