Four life sentences, seven total acquittals and six other convictions, four of which were against as many collaborators of justice. This is the outcome of the abbreviated trial relating to the anti-mafia operation called “Portosalvo” which aims to shed light on some murders committed in some hamlets of the municipality of Vibo Valentia. In particular, the investigation aimed to shed light on the murders of Davide Fortuna, Michele Palumbo, Massimo Stanganello and Mario Longo. In light of the sentence, the Palumbo and Stanganello crimes remain unpunished (the defendants were acquitted), while convictions were recorded for the Fortuna and Longo murders.
The life sentences concern: Francesco Alessandria, 55 years old, from Sorianello (Fortuna murder); Rosario Battaglia, 41 years old, from Piscopio (for the Longo murder, Palumbo acquitted for the murder); Salvatore Patania, 47 years old, and Saverio Patania, 49 years old, from Stefanaconi (Fortuna murder). Acquitted of the murder were Stanganello Angelo David, 42 years old, from Piscopio and Stefano Farfaglia, 42 years old, from San Gregorio d’Ippona (30 years each had been requested). The accused Rosario Fiorillo di Piscopio, for whom a life sentence had been requested, was acquitted of the Stanganello and Palumbo murders. Justice collaborators Giuseppe Comito, Nicola Figliuzzi, Raffaele Moscato and Renato Marziano were also sentenced to sentences ranging from 4 to 10 years. (AGI)
