Moments of tension last night in front of the city’s Town Hall, where unknown persons left a gas cylinder in front of the side door of the municipal building. The episode, defined as “cowardly and irresponsible” by the mayor, Giovanni Piccolo, immediately mobilized the police and the fire brigade. According to what was reported by the mayor, the timely intervention of the Carabinieri and the Fire Brigade avoided much more serious consequences, guaranteeing the safety of the area and the citizens.
Particular praise was also given to the residents, who promptly reported the incident, demonstrating civic sense and collaboration with the authorities. “This is a shameful act – declared Mayor Piccolo – which will not intimidate our administrative action in any way. The municipal administration will continue with determination on the path traced: that of legality, transparency and service to the community.” The Mayor assured that he will personally inform citizens of the developments of the matter, confirming his commitment to maintaining maximum transparency. “Our city will be able to react with unity and courage – he added – because no intimidation will be able to stop the path of legality and the common good.” Investigations are already underway to identify those responsible for the act and clarify the reasons behind the gesture.
The Rector of the Basilica of the Madonna dei Poveri, Don Domenico Caruso, also spoke on the matter: “in light of the serious episode that occurred during the night, I wish, on behalf of the parish community, to express to the mayor, Giovanni Piccolo, and to the entire municipal administration, our full solidarity and closeness. The cowardly and irresponsible gesture committed against the Municipality is not only an attack on the institutions, but an offense to the entire city community, which every day is committed to building a peaceful future with effort and hope, of respect and legality. As a Church, we unite with conviction in the mayor’s words: no intimidation can stop the path of the common good. In the face of fear and violence, we respond with unity, prayer and shared responsibility. We address a thought of gratitude to the Carabinieri, the Fire Brigade and to all those who, with promptness and dedication, have guaranteed the safety of all with good, to fear with trust, to violence with the gentle force of peace. With fraternal esteem and sincere participation, I assure you of my prayers for our country, for its administrators and for all citizens, so that together we can continue to build a common home founded on justice, dialogue and the courage of truth”.
