Excited, but at ease on that stage. Behind him, the big screen to which he entrusted his childhood dreams, and in front of him an adoring audience that confirms their esteem and affection: lThe visit of director Gianni Amelio to the Teatro Comunale of Catanzaro, in the heart of the historic center, becomes a great celebration and an occasion to seal the deep love that the maestro has for the capital city. Amelio met the public between the two screenings of his latest film, Battlefieldalready presented at the Venice Film Festival.

A work that, set during the First World War, explores not only physical conflicts, but also internal ones, intertwining ethical dilemmas and personal responsibilities. The theme, deeply human, is perfectly linked to the artistic path of Amelio, who has signed masterpieces such as Il ladro di bambini and Lamerica, in addition to the more recent Hammamet and Il signore delle formiche. Welcoming him on stage, the artistic director of the Comunale, Francis Passafarowho recalled how Amelio has been close to the theatre since its reopening: «The Comunale brings good luck», he said with affection, underlining the special bond between the director and the Catanzaro theatre.

Amelio spoke to the audience with touching and authentic simplicity, recalling his long-standing bond with the Comunale: «I was a child when I came here as a spectator. In 1958, the theater was inaugurated with Around the World in 80 Days. I remember all the films I saw and even from which row I watched them». A nostalgic dive into the past that, however, did not prevent the director from also addressing more critical issues regarding his city.

Like a loving but stern father, Amelio stressed: «We Catanzaresi often do not love each other as much as we should. We should protect our city more, which is beautiful. It hurt me to see the Politeama and the old market destroyed. And today I ask myself: what is happening to the Masciari Theater? It is sad to see it in a state of abandonmentbut I can already imagine it being reborn.”

The Councillor for Culture of the Municipality of Catanzaro responded, Donatella Monteverdiin the audience together with her colleague delegate for Productive Activities, Giuliana Furrer. Monteverdi explained that the Masciari is «one of the works that we will surely complete in the next Urban Agenda. It is the least that can be done for this city: to return a jewel, because that is a true jewel. We have worked very well with the Superintendence of Fine Arts».
