Ensure an integrated taking charge, reduce waiting times, contain health migration and offer care closer to national and international standards. With these objectives, the Provincial Health Authority of Crotone has established three multidisciplinary oncological groups (Gom), dedicated to the tumors of the gastrointestinal system, the Uro-Genitale and breast area (the latter in the context of the Breast Unit of the “Renato Dulbecco” of Catanzaro).
The tires are permanent tables of clinical comparison in which they participate, on a regular basis, oncologists, surgeons, radiologists, anatomopathologists, urologists, gastroenterologists, radiotherapists and other specialist figures. The objective is to collect the cases collegially and to define, for each oncological patient, the most appropriate and timely diagnostic-therapeutic and rehabilitative path. This approach ensures that each decision is based on the most updated scientific evidence (evidence based medicine) and that the application of the therapeutic welfare diagnostic protocols (PDTA) is respected.
The proposal to structure the three aforementioned Goms has been advanced by the UCOLOLOGY OF THE ASP of Crotone, directed by Dr. Carla Cortese, who underlined the importance of strengthening the oncological network and allowing patients to access complete care paths without having to move away from their province.
In addition, for over a year, the Asp of Crotone has been inserted with its UOC of oncology in the Breast Unit Center Center of Catanzaro (the multidisciplinary network dedicated to the diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer). This allows the discussion and the therapeutic approach in a correct integration between the Spoke Crotone hospital and its reference hub, allowing the surgical approach to the University Hospital of Catanzaro and the AOPC of Catanzaro (surgies with volume of suitable interventions for the breast pathology).
The multidisciplinary oncological groups enhance the internal skills of the “San Giovanni di Dio” hospital, integrating the hospital with other professional figures operating at affiliated structures in the area (Marrelli Hospital for the radiotherapy service and Romolo Hospital for the UOC of Urology).
“Goms are a precious tool to ensure quality, timely and multidisciplinary assistance to oncological patients – underlines the extraordinary commissioner of the Asp of Crotone, Monica Calamai -. With their institution we consolidate clear and shared paths, which center the patient and guarantee continuity between diagnosis, therapy and rehabilitation. It is an important result that testifies to the commitment of the health company Professionals, and who encourages us to look with confidence in the future of oncology in the province of Crotone “.
With this initiative, Crotone’s ASP aligns the best national and international practices, strengthening its role in the care of oncological pathologies and promoting modern and really -oriented organizational models to the patient.
