Lamezia carabinieri were patrolling the area during a normal service when they noticed a young man about to commit suicide. It was 3 in the morning when the 23 -year -old, originally from a municipality in Northern Italy and on a holiday, was noticed on the bridge of the Piazza torrent: he had climbed over the parapet and, at their sight, clinging to the railing threatening to let himself fall on the void if someone had approached him.
The military then established a half hour interview with the boy, to understand the reasons behind his intentions and, at the same time, to convince him to desist.
The Operations Center of the Carabinieri Company of Lamezia Terme, in the meantime, quickly coordinated the rescue by requesting the support of the firefighters of Lamezia Terme and the intervention of medical personnel of 118.
The crew of the radio section, at that point, perceiving the situation of real danger and the actual conviction of the young man to commit suicide, taking advantage of his distraction, grabbed him by an arm just as he let himself fall, an exhausting effort with bare hands despite the fact that he tried to free himself from the grip.
With the help of the firefighters who arrived on the spot, the young man was then harnessed and, in complete safety, reported on the road where, rescued by 118 personnel, he was transported to the Lamezia Terme hospital for the investigations and the necessary treatments.
