Started today in Saponara, the demolition of the building in via Roma 321, where in November 2011 three people lost their lives due to the landslide that devastated the Tyrrhenian country. In his place, a garden of memory will be built, dedicated to little Luca Vinci, 10 years old, and Luigi and Giuseppe Valla, father and son, respectively 52 and 25 years old.

“We remember the victims of that tragic event and we renew our commitment in the prevention and protection of the territory, in the awareness that investing in safety means saving human lives and protecting places” said the president of the Sicilian region Renato Schifani, who also guides the structure of contrasting hydrogeological instability.

The operations started in the presence of the mayor of Saponara Giuseppe Merlino, the director of the commissioner structure Sergio Tumminello, the municipal technicians and the Damar Costruzioni Srl company, in charge of the consolidation works.

At the same time, the interventions for the safety of the slopes of the hamlet of Scarcelli and via Como continue, a work with a total value of three million euros, financed by the commissioner structure and intended to end in March 2026. The project provides for targeted actions on the hill above the houses: remodeling of the slopes with wooden bulkheads, laying of high -resistance metal networks to prevent the fall of debris, drainage and channels to regiment the waters. To this is added the cleaning of the riverbed of the stream and the verification of the existing bridles.

A path of memory and security, therefore, which aims to return to Saponara not only a place of memory but also greater protection against hydrogeological risk.
