Iran “is a victim of terrorism” and will not bow to “bullies” who do not respect international law. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian replies to Donald Trump from the UN stage. In support of his accusations he shows the world photos of the children killed at school under American bombs. “They had not committed any crime,” he said dryly. In front of the images, the American delegation, made up of a single member, left the room.
“We have never been an aggressor, we have never started a war” but we will “defend ourselves”, Pezeshkian explained to the General Assembly before calling the American president into question. «We will never bow our heads or bow. Trump and those who try to intimidate us must understand that we are ready for dialogue and negotiations, but without accepting the language of force”, he explained, responding to the commander-in-chief who, from the same stage in the temple of diplomacy, threatened to want to “annihilate” Iran.
However, Trump’s words were followed shortly afterwards by a meeting between the two delegations, during which Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi explained to the American envoys Tehran’s conditions for the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, i.e. the lifting of the US naval blockade, the rapid release of all frozen Iranian assets and the “end of the war on all fronts of the resistance”.
“It was a positive meeting but there was no breakthrough,” reported Marco Rubio, at the same time also warning the Houthis of Yemen. “Trump has many options” regarding their attacks on Saudi Arabia, the secretary of state noted after officials warned that an American intervention in the Bab el Mandeb Strait would be considered a “red line.” Tensions at the crossroads have risen in recent weeks, threatening oil flows already under pressure from the standoff between the United States and Iran in Hormuz.
“We cannot allow some to have free access” to the Strait and “take advantage of it, using it to attack us, to undermine our security and to prevent us from accessing our own waterways,” the Iranian president warned. Hormuz is proving to be the most difficult issue to resolve between Washington and Tehran, together with the nuclear issue. Trump has been repeating for months that the objective of his war in Iran, now in its seventh month, is to prevent the country from obtaining a nuclear weapon.
«We say it clearly: no nuclear weapons, but no limitations on the development of new peaceful nuclear technologies», the Iranian president replied from the UN, noting how «the atomic and nuclear bombs are in the hands of Israel, but the inspectors are asking to come to Iran. Israel kills but Iran is subject to sanctions.” Denouncing the existing “double standards”, Pezeshkian then clarified that Iran “does not want privileged but equal treatment”. The Iranian president also lashed out against the United States and Israel for Palestine.
«It is an open wound in the conscience of the international community. Lasting peace is impossible without justice in Palestine”, he denounced, asking that in the 21st century we do not “regress to an era dominated only by the powerful, by prevaricating powers and by hegemons”. Reiterating that Iranian resistance “will increase in the face of bullies and sanctions,” such as America’s Operation Economic Outcast, Pezeshkian then called for a clear message to Washington: “Our regional issues must be resolved within the region, without becoming a toy in the hands of external aggressors.”
