Constantly growing numbers for Lamezia Terme airport. Even in the month of September, as has been the case in recent years, the trend continues to rise, as regards the presence of passengers. In particular, the month of September recorded an acceleration of +23% for the Lameto airport compared to the same period of the previous year, exceeding 393 thousand passengers transited. A leap forward driven in particular by the increase in international routes, which demonstrate how the area continues to attract visitors well beyond the traditional summer peaks. Completing the airport’s positive performance are also the data relating to the cargo sector, with goods transport maintaining an important position for Calabrian logistics and commercial handling, supporting the local production and entrepreneurial fabric.
But the progressive increase in connections and flight demand makes the construction of the new airport more urgent than ever, a strategic and long-awaited work, necessary to meet the needs of an airport whose current terminal, scaled down compared to the real traffic volumes, struggles to contain the flows of travelers during peak hours.
The tender has already been awarded. The restyling and expansion project will transform the infrastructure into a modern and spacious hub, capable of offering quality and safety standards aligned with the highest international levels. The plan involves the construction of a maxi-air terminal measuring 19 thousand square metres, an impressive work costing over 100 million euros with a central body 220 meters long and 24 meters high.
A project that has been awaited for years and which should be launched soon. As also reported during the city council meeting by Mayor Mario Murone who reassured the Chamber and citizens that work on the new airport will begin shortly, underlining the centrality of the airport in the development plans and the investments of almost 120 million euros envisaged as part of the Sacal management.
The intervention aims to completely redesign the usability of the spaces: from the areas for security checks to the boarding area, from the reception services to the new accessible road and vehicle parking solutions. The new terminal, as explained by the management company itself, “sustainable and technologically advanced, will be able to welcome millions of passengers a year in large and functional environments”.
The anticipation among economic operators, institutions and citizens is very high, since the strengthening of Lamezia represents the fundamental driving force for consolidating tourism and the economic development of the whole of Calabria.
