Senator Nicola Irto, regional secretary of the Calabria PD, raised the issue of security in Lamezia Terme directly to the Minister of the Interior with a formal question. The objective is clear: to obtain the immediate strengthening of the police force and the adoption of extraordinary measures to stem the worrying wave of acts of intimidation that is gripping the city.

The initiative found the authoritative support of Senator Vincenza Rando, who holds the delicate responsibility for the fight against mafias, legality and transparency in the national secretariat of the Democratic Party, co-signing the act.

The long trail of intimidating acts

For months, Lamezia Terme has been the scene of an incessant sequence of serious criminal episodes which have generated a climate of fear and palpable tension. The city has been hit by events ranging from the explosion of bombs placed in front of shops, to explicit threats through the use of incendiary bottles and even bullets.

The seriousness of the situation was further highlighted by acts such as the excavator set on fire at the construction site in the San Teodoro district, up to the recent discovery of a petrol can left in front of a convenience store in Via Fusco. An escalation that has put the community to the test, in particular traders, entrepreneurs and ordinary citizens.

Fraught: “Not isolated episodes, the city must not be left alone”

Senator Irto does not mince words to describe the state of affairs. “There is a real escalation going on,” he declares, refuting the hypothesis of random events. “We are not faced with isolated episodes, but with an intimidating strategy that must be stopped immediately.”

The secretary of the PD Calabria appeals to the Government asking for concrete intervention: “I asked the Minister for more men in the area, more controls, more presence of the State. Lamezia cannot be left alone.”

Request for clarity on the investigations

In addition to strengthening the presence in the field, Senator Irto also calls for a clear stance and transparency regarding the progress of the investigations. “The government must say what it knows about the progress of the investigation, what stage it has reached and what concrete measures it intends to take,” he states firmly. “Citizens have the right to security and also to certain answers.”

At the end of his speech, the Democratic senator underlines the strategic importance of the battle: “Defending Lamezia means safeguarding the economy, work and freedom of an entire area of the region. No one can think of governing a territory with fear.”

The Calabria Democratic Party expressed full solidarity with all affected traders, entrepreneurs and workers, assuring that the evolution of the situation will be followed “step by step”.
