It resembles, every day more, a giant with clay feet. Or perhaps to a huge skeleton, “archaeological” find of a creature now extinct for some time. However, you look at it, a monument to degradation remains the former load pier of the Pumex, located in the Porticello area in Lipari. Broken two by the storm of November 2008, it represents, now, due to the erosive action of the sea And the failure to maintain, given the cessation of the extractive activity of the pumice, a real danger for public safety, especially in this period, with the whole area of the neighboring destination of bathers and pleasure boats.
The structure, in the part closest to the coast, is dangerously inclined in several places, with the iron putrelle on which it rests which, in some parts, are really reduced to the minimum terms: the risk of collapse, with attached consequences, appears more and more possible. A radical intervention to safeguard the public safety (the neighboring area is frequented by bathers) appears no longer procrastinable.
Among other things, already in November 2015, the Liparese maritime authority had warned the bankruptcy trustee of the former PumexMassimo Galletti, and today the situation has definitely worsened.
Meanwhile, the work in the pier of the hamlet of Canneto, damaged by the storm of 17 January are completed: they are financed by the Region- Department of Infrastructure and Mobility, for an amount of 12,647.48 euros.
