Today, 10 July, the formal request for the repatriation of the bodies of the four laborers victims of the Amendolara massacre will be sent to the Civil Protection. The sending of the request by the families of the victims, temporarily hosted by an association from Cassano dello Ionio, will take place thanks to the cultural mediation offered by Flai CGIL and Cidis, which support the relatives of the foreign workers who died on June 1st in the fire of a minivan at the service station along state road 106.

In fact, the results of the DNA tests, useful for officially identifying the victims, were notified on Saturday. The investigations were ordered by the Castrovillari Prosecutor’s Office which is investigating the death of the labourers. The Civil Protection department will manage the repatriation of the bodies, as ordered by the Calabria Region council which will also bear the costs. For this purpose, the Regional Council approved a change to the budget by creating a specific expenditure chapter allocating sums of 100 thousand euros.

The Civil Protection is completing the procedures for the assignment of the coffin transport service which will take place via a cargo flight to Afghanistan and Pakistan, the countries of origin of the four labourers. The family members are therefore waiting for the return of their relatives; following the bodies will be the cousin of one of the four victims who will be boarded on a scheduled flight to Afghanistan. The Civil Protection will also manage the return journey to the European countries of residence of the other family members, who have arrived in Calabria to allow the identification of the bodies. According to what we learn, the process will take a few more days as it is a particularly complex administrative activity.
