The project “Installation works for a digital tower called “Sarrizzo Puntale Bandiera” located in the Municipality of Messina, with the aim of creating an efficient observation system that puts a functional and functioning sighting system online, is preparing to move from paper to concrete steps”. It was prepared by the Departmental Forestry Inspectorate of Messina, led by the manager Giovanni Cavallaro, and now the process has reached the stage of passing to the specialist technical commission of the Sicilian Region, for obtaining the Vinca, the environmental impact assessment. The construction of a support base which will house a photovoltaic system, the location of a thermal imaging camera and a protective fence is planned. The presence of the masonry turret with the reinforced concrete roof slab will allow the 12.5 km visibility thermal imaging camera to be installed directly on the roof, with the nailing of a small truss element onto the attic. The thermal imager will be placed inside the Faraday cage or otherwise connected to it. The observation point enjoys excellent visibility and has a fairly clear view; however, it will be necessary to thin out some nearby trees of considerable height to free up the field of vision of the thermal camera in the expected 360°.
But what is this work for? The objectives are to respect areas with particular naturalistic, landscape and historical fragility through the careful conservation of places; knowledge and the consequent valorisation of the immense so-called minor cultural basins, in the project area in question. Thus, it will be possible to evaluate in advance and with scientific criteria the “Carring Capacity”, i.e. the carrying capacity of the naturalistic areas crossed, respecting the environmental balance and ecosystems. Consequently, the risk of fire and the consequent ecological damage that could upset the integrity of the entire Natura 2000 Site will be reduced. One of the strong points consists in monitoring phenomena on the Hills in real time, so as to plan actions as quickly as possible and plan ahead. (rd)
