The world of Sport Messina and Nazionale is in mourning for the disappearance of Nino Micali, 63 years old, historical figure of baseball and university sport. Former president of Cus Unime and current regional president of the Italian Baseball Softball Federation, Micali leaves a deep void in those who met him inside and outside the diamond. His sports career began as an athlete, proudly wearing the Cus Messina jacket. In 1974 he was among the protagonists of the conquest of the Italian title and subsequently played in the Serie A championships, becoming one of the symbols of the city baseball.
Passed to the role of manager, Micali continued to write important pages: in 1998 he was among the organizers and protagonists of the Baseball World Championship played in Messina. As president of Cus Unime, he distinguished himself for the recovery of the “Primo Nebiolo” stadium, reported to its original function after being transformed into tent cities for refugees.
His commitment and his vision did not pass unnoticed. In 2017, the then president of the FIBS Andrea Marcon appointed him to the head of the University Sport Commission, entrusting him with the task of starting a path for the spread and structuring of baseball and softball in the CUS throughout Italy. Known and respected for his passion, Micali has been able to combine the role of athlete, manager and man of sports institutions, becoming a reference figure for several generations.
The Messina and National Sports Community remembers him today not only for his goals, but above all for the dedication with which he has been able to represent and enhance baseball and university sport.
