The fire emergency that has been devastating the Messina area has not stopped. After the bonfires that threatened the Santo and Messina 2 village and the surrounding residential areas, new fronts of fire also opened in the northern area of the city, between tone and timpazzi.
The flames, fed by a strong sirocco wind, are rapidly advancing and threaten this part of the urban territory too. The situation is extremely delicate: the active front in the tone area has already devoured large areas of Mediterranean scrub. In Timpazzi, the fire has gained ground within a few hours, despite the incessant efforts of the rescue teams.
The firefighters, already engaged on several outbreaks in the southern area of the city, are trying to contain the advance of the flames with the help of trucks, special vehicles and, where possible, with air support. The wind represents the main obstacle to the interventions. The strong and unpredictable gusts feed the bonfires and favor their propagation, making the attempts to approach by land by the fire -fighting teams dangerous.
