«There cannot be an Integrated Strait Area without territorial continuity. The government will have to recognize this with a national law, a single and discounted ticket that allows Sicilians and Calabrians from both shores to travel without that expensive ticket which today makes free movement impossible for citizens and families.” This is what the mayor of Villa San Giovanni, Giusy Caminiti, and her team consider priority. «Only after a law and a concrete national economic investment – they explain – will it be possible to think of a mobility agency, of a real LPT of the Strait, of surface metros, of the relaunch of tourism, cruise tourism, yachting, of the “Strait Sundays” and of many other initiatives to valorise the territories. There is no need to recognize – as the first citizen, majority and executive of Villesi point out – the Integrated Area of the Strait (it has already existed since the 1980s and most recently in the law establishing the Metropolitan City of Reggio Calabria), but it is necessary to make it so and the commercial and pedestrian ports of Villa and Messina are needed for a new dynamic mobility of the Strait (i.e. with ships, hydrofoils and rails) with the central and fundamental role of the Port System Authority of the Strait and it is certainly not necessary lastly, the reduction of rates for residents. Villa – they then add – is the geographical and logistical hinge of this Area: a role that must be valorised, as recognized by Mayor Cannizzaro in a conversation with Mayor Caminiti. And this administration will always continue to sit at all the tables where the problems and opportunities of the territory are addressed with seriousness and responsibility.”
