The counting of the elections for the renewal of the Metropolitan Council of Messina has concluded. With the proclamation of the fourteen elected councilors, the composition of the assembly is completed which will support the metropolitan mayor Federico Basile in defining the strategies and policies of the vast area for the entire metropolitan territory.
The distribution of seats
The following political composition of the assembly emerges from the vote: South Call North is the most represented force with 7 councillors, followed by Fratelli d’Italia – Giorgia Meloni with 3, Democratic Party with 2, League – Salvini Premier and Grande Sicilia with 1.
The turnout
The consultation recorded a turnout of 82.81%: 1,055 of the 1,274 eligible voters voted, confirming the broad participation of local administrators in an event that plays a central role in the governance of the metropolitan area.
The elections were held with the second level system provided for by current legislation. The votes were cast exclusively by the mayors and municipal councilors of the 108 municipalities of the Metropolitan City of Messina. The allocation of seats took place through weighted voting, which assigns preferences a different weight in relation to the population of the municipality to which the voter belongs, guaranteeing a balanced representation of the entire district.
Among those elected, the result of the mayor of Milazzo, Giuseppe Midili (Brothers of Italy), stands out, who with 10,719 weighted votes is the most voted candidate. Behind him, the municipal councilor of Patti Salvatore Sidoti (Democratic Party), with 6,907 weighted votes, while the mayor of Graniti Carmelo Lo Monte (South calls North) completes the podium, who totals 4,615 weighted votes.

During the new council, the Metropolitan Council will be called upon to define the strategic directions of the Institution, approving the fundamental planning acts and contributing to the choices regarding territorial planning, the road network, school buildings, environmental protection, valorisation and development of the territory.
