Two operations that have been awaited for years have finally come to fruition in Messina. The Municipality has formalized the acquisition of the Sant’Orsola Market area from the Asp of Messina and the area in front of the “G. Mazzini” school, intended for the construction of the future school gym.
These are two administrative steps that allow the Authority to plan new interventions and unblock situations that have remained stagnant for decades.
Sant’Orsola Market, a story that has been open for over twenty years comes to an end
With managerial resolution no. 5512 of 12 June 2026, the agreement reached in the technical table of 14 November 2025 is followed up, defining the acquisition of the area on which the historic municipal market stands.
The operation allows the Municipality to regain full availability of the space and to plan the regeneration interventions of the area.
Gym of the Mazzini school, a stalemate that lasted over thirty years has been overcome
The acquisition of the area in front of the “G. Mazzini” school, formalized on May 17th, represents a decisive step towards starting the design phase of the future school gym, awaited by generations of students, families and school staff.
The statements of the mayor Federico Basile
«These are two concrete results that demonstrate the Administration’s ability to transform commitments into real actions – declares the mayor Federico Basile -. We are not talking about announcements, but about completed administrative procedures which today allow the Municipality to plan interventions that have been awaited for years. The Sant’Orsola Market and the area in front of the Mazzini school intended for the construction of the gym are two clear examples of how we intend to work: unblocking situations that have been stuck for some time and returning functional and modern spaces to the city”.
The mayor highlighted how both operations are part of the broader program of urban redevelopment and enhancement of public heritage.
«Since 2022 we have started a planning and investment process which today enters an even more concrete phase – continues Basile -. With these acquisitions we overcome historical critical issues and pave the way for the design of the works. This is how a more modern city is built: with actions, resources and a clear vision of priorities.”
The planned interventions
For the Sant’Orsola Market, the future planning of an overall redevelopment intervention aimed at transforming it into a modern commercial space fully integrated into the urban context is envisaged.
For the area in front of the “G. Mazzini” school, however, the acquisition will allow us to start the process that will lead to the construction of a new gym, which has been awaited for over thirty years.
«Schools and public spaces are at the center of our administrative action – concludes the Mayor -. Restoring dignity and functionality to these places means investing in the future of the city and the new generations.”
