“I can talk about a war scenario that makes a person, a family and an entire community tremble.” This is the thought of the mayor of Montebello Jonico, Leonardo Suraci, after the terrible fire that occurred in Saline in the middle of the night and which sowed terror and indignation.
A sad and horrifying event which, as stated by the mayor, “generates dismay”. If it were to be ascertained that this was a malicious event, it would represent an alarm bell because the perpetrators did not consider the possible consequences on the life and safety of people.
In fact, the promptness of the Carabinieri and Fire Brigade meant that nearby residents were brought to safety very quickly. And where we breathed smoke, we also breathed terror. It seemed – says Suraci – “a real war, with high flames and smoke on every side”. The fire sowed questions and reflections together with anger and firm condemnation of those responsible if it were to be arson.
