Marc Marquez wins the Sprint of the Australian Grand Prix and returns to the top of the MotoGP World Championship. At Phillip Island, home to the eighteenth round of the season, the Ducati Spaniard, who started from pole position, precedes his brother Alex and Fabio Di Giannantonio: a hat-trick for the Borgo Panigale manufacturer. However, Jorge Martin’s fall marked the race. The Aprilia rider, having moved up from fourth on the grid and engaged in a tight duel with Marquez, ends up in the gravel and is transported off the track on a stretcher.

Martin, radius fracture: misses long race

Initial tests revealed a fracture of the right radius and a suspected fracture of the right ulna in the distal location. Martin has been declared unfit and will not take part in tomorrow’s long race. Marquez will thus have the opportunity to increase his lead in the standings to 35 points. The recovery times of the Aprilia rider remain to be assessed, as he also risks missing the events in Malaysia and Qatar, scheduled for the weekends of 30 October-1 November and 6-8 November respectively.

Di Giannantonio on the podium, Bezzecchi recovers to fourth place

Di Giannantonio finishes 0″590 behind the winner and takes the third step of the podium for the VR46. «I started well, but I made a mistake due to the wind. Then I managed to have fun and climb back up, which is a shame because there is always something missing to do better», comments the Italian, already projected towards the long race: «We can certainly be competitive tomorrow». Fourth is Marco Bezzecchi, who recovers from ninth position with the Aprilia and precedes Pedro’s Ktm Acosta. His first thought is for his teammate: “It’s really a shame for Jorge, for the team and for all of Aprilia. I want to send him a big hug.” As for his own performance, Bezzecchi adds: “But I’m happy with the Sprint, I really enjoyed myself in qualifying.”

Ogura and Binder also scored points, a technical problem for Bagnaia

Completing the points are Ai Ogura, sixth with the Aprilia Trackhouse at 6″146, Brad Binder, seventh with the Ktm at 7″433, Jack Miller, eighth with the Yamaha Pramac at 7″782, and Diogo Moreira, ninth with the Honda LCR at 10″722. Retirement due to a technical problem for Francesco Bagnaia: the Ducati rider was outside the points zone when he was forced to stop.
