Naxos Park, theater and university research: the winners of the Comunicare l’Antico Award 2024. A month of events in Naxos and Taormina

The world of theatre in Italy and Greece and the university world, with archaeologists involved in research and scientific dissemination, will be the protagonists of the Communicating the Ancient Award 2024, in program Sunday 1st September at the Archaeological Park of Naxos (Nike Theatre, 7.00 pm). The event, now in its seventh edition, is organised by Archaeological Park Naxos Taormina from the Sicilian Regiondirected by the archaeologist Gabriella Tiganoin collaboration with the festival Naxoslaw (whose artistic direction is entrusted to Fulvia Tuscan) and with the Archeoclub Naxos-Taormina-Alcantara Valley.

Here are the 2024 winners: the director and actor Daniel Save – author, among other things, of highly appreciated direction of texts by Aeschylus, Sophocles and Euripides; the Greek Theodore Angelopoulosfor the International Festival of Young Ancient Drama of Corinth which offers a review of classical theatre created by students; the cultural association of Viterbo “Scaenic Games”, which for 25 years has promoted and spread knowledge of ancient music and dance; Monica Centanni (University of Venice), Greek scholar, scholar of Greek tragedy and founder of the magazine “Engramma” dedicated to the classical tradition in Western memory; finally the archaeologists Fabio Paganodirector of the Campi Flegrei Archaeological Park since 2019 and professor at the University of Udine; Max Frasca (University of Catania) and former Director of the School of Specialization in Archaeology and Archaeological Heritage of the University of Catania (recently author of a Guide to the Archaeological Park of Leontinoi which will be presented on Saturday 31 August, at 7 pm, at the Museum of Naxos). Memorial award to the archaeologist Francis The Tower (University of Messina), who died prematurely two years ago and was appreciated by the international scientific community for his study of cultural interactions between the Greeks and the indigenous populations of Magna Graecia and Sicily. The awards will be presented by, among others: Giovanna Spatari (Rector of UniMe), Max Cultraro (archaeologist), Max Raffa (musicologist), Gigi Hospital (Latitudes Network). Among the speakers: the mayor of Giardini Naxos, George Stracuzzithe art historian Silvia Mazza and the archaeologist Alessio Toscano RaffaThe winners will be given a sculpture by the master Turi Azzolina inspired by the satyr mask, a recurring figure among the finds in the collection of the Museum of Naxos. During the evening, presented by the television presenter Francesca Russomusical performances by the group are planned Klostes, female formation that offers traditional music with folk instruments. Admission to the ceremony is free.

The Comunicare l’Antico Award is part of a wider programme of literary and theatrical events (the review Interpreting the Ancient, curated by Rete Latitudini) and the “The Shadow of Dionysus” Award (edited by Naxoslegge) which takes place throughout the month of September and kicked off on August 20th with dawn at the theatre at the Naxos Park and the extraordinary show “Gilgamesh” by John Calcagno and Vincenzo Pirrotta (in the preview photo).

The next literary events are: Saturday 31st August with the book by Massimo Frasca “Guide to the archaeology of Leontinoi” (Naxos Museum, 7 pm); Monday 2nd September meeting on “On the routes of the Greeks and Phoenicians”, a round table discussion between Italy, Greece and Spain for the proposal to create a network of cities of Greek origin in the Mediterranean. Project of the association “Rotta dei Fenici”, directed by Antonio Barone (Naxos Museum, 5 pm); Thursday 5th September Maria Teresa Magro and Marco Stefano Scaravilli will present the volume on the “Civic Archaeological Museum ‘Paolo Vagliasindi’ of Randazzo” (Gazebo della Nike, 6.30 pm); Tuesday, September 10in Taormina (6 pm, Palazzo Ciampoli), “Our Lady of the Ancient Mediterranean: Navigation and the Cult of Isis between Hellenism and the Empire”, a conference on the cult of Isis by scholars Giacomo Cavillier and Flavia Frisone. An initiative linked to the archaeological exhibition “From Tauromenion to Tauromenium” underway at Palazzo Ciampoli until November 30 (visits every day from 10 am to 7 pm). Also in Taormina, Friday, September 13that Palazzo Ciampoli the presentation of the catalogue of the exhibition organised by the Naxos Taormina Archaeological Park in 2022, “Humility and Splendor”, curated by Stefania Lanuzza and Virginia Buda, with contributions by Gioacchino Barbera and Alessandro Zùccari.

The “Communicating the Ancient” poster ends on September 29th with the 3rd edition of the “L’ombra di Dioniso” award, curated by NaxosLegge, Latitudini and Dams Messina At 6 pm a performance in the archaeological area of ​​the Naxos Park with Dario Tomasello and the students of the DAMS of Messina. THE COMMUNICATING THE ANCIENT PRIZE

The Comunicare l’antico Award, assigned by the Naxos Taormina Archaeological Park, was born in 2017 from an idea by Fulvia Toscano, artistic director of the literary festival, and is awarded to Italian and foreign scholars and personalities involved in the dissemination of archaeological, historical and philological research, but also to institutions and museums that have implemented important strategies of valorization and communication to the general public.
