In the football championship now upon us, particular attention will be given to combating time wasters, with a large regulatory update compared to the last season. The new rules that will be introduced from the start of the new Serie A and B football season were illustrated today, at the end of the annual meeting of the Italian Referees Association, in Cascia.
Substitutions, 10 seconds to leave the pitch
To replace a starting player with a reserve player, it will be necessary to comply with the “time limit protocol”. Once the player has received authorization, he must reach the nearest sideline and leave the pitch in no more than 10 seconds. The counting of these will begin when the fourth man displays the illuminated board. At the end of these periods, if the player has not left the pitch, except in cases where it is not possible to leave for safety reasons or due to injury, the reserve player will not be able to enter until the first interruption.
One minute off the pitch after treatment
An injured athlete who undergoes treatment or evaluation on the field or who causes a stoppage in play will be required to exit and remain out for one minute after the restart.
However, there will be situations in which these rules will be waived: if a goalkeeper and a player collide and immediate treatment is necessary; if players from the same team clash; if a serious injury will occur; if the player is injured following an infringement which will result in a warning or expulsion.
Delays on throw-ins, corner kick may be taken
Lastly, if a team deliberately delays the execution of a goal kick or throw-in beyond the five-second count, a corner kick will be awarded to the opposing team.
The VAR also changes
There will also be an important change in the VAR area. In fact, the possibility of removing the second yellow card which leads to a red card will be given by reviewing the video. Furthermore, through this, it will be possible to intervene for a clearly incorrectly awarded corner kick (even when the ball has left the pitch beyond the touchline), provided that this can be done immediately and without delaying the restart of play.
