Since yesterday all eyes have been focused up there. Towards the blue that looms over the Strait. Where they dare… the Kites. The international festival that makes Messina – together with San Vito Lo Capo – the Sicilian capital of kites, began in Torre Faro, after last Sunday’s preview on the Santa Margherita beach. Passionate about the art (and sport) of kite flying come from various parts of the world, from Belgium, France, Brazil and Argentina.

This year, as part of the Festival, there are particular moments dedicated to Giulia Scimone, the 15-year-old who died in Torre Faro due to an absurd road accident caused by a minor who was “doing wheelies” on his scooter. The riding school where Giulia trained organized a pony ride for the children and there is also a creative workshop for making little horses. Furthermore, this morning, after the official inauguration ceremony, a large kite carries Giulia’s face and smile in the wind of the Strait.

Today’s program includes performances by kite flyers between 10am and 7pm; from 10 to 20 craft exhibitions. There will be stands of the Pro Loco Capo Peloro, organizer of the event together with the Municipality of Messina. And then a series of live shows, DJ sets, board games, magic with soap bubbles, the “Avenue of the Artists”, the immersive room open to the “Macho” Museum, the storytellers, the exhibition of maritime knots, the throwing of sweets, the pony ride for children, the fire juggling show.

From 8pm to 11.30pm the magical night flight with the Kite Festival. It will be repeated tomorrow too.
