Over fifty repressive interventions in the last three months. A data, that of the activity of the municipal police in Piazza Lo Sardo, which the commander Giovanni Giardina had pitted in the council hall just a few hours before the umpteenth aggressive in the pedestrian area. The sixth commission turned on the headlights on safety in the square and Giardina had highlighted the difficulties encountered: the interventions of the agents were the most disparate, from the vandalism to the seizures carried out to some ethnic activities. Without neglecting the problematic aspect of the homeless and without license without license that spread their objects in plain sight. After the last attack, the municipal police decided to enhance the control services with the most frequent passage of patrols in the square. Several municipal councilors had advanced the hypothesis of the establishment of a fixed garrison but, as the Giardina himself pointed out, it could be prepared with the new hires of agents scheduled in November.
In short, it is necessary to wait unless a different decision is made from the Prefecture of Messina where, every week, the Committee for public order and security meets the situation in the city and in the province. Even today, at the Palazzo del Governo, a meeting is scheduled, officially in view of the start of the new school year but it is not excluded that the aspect of safety in the public square is also deepened.
The spontaneous committee of citizens and merchants, also supported by the fourth municipality, meanwhile, ensures that it will continue to guard and monitor the square where there is a surveillance camera connected with the Operational Center of the police but appears insufficient to “map” the whole area.
