The Port System Authority of the Southern Tyrrhenian and Ionian Seas, led by President Paolo Piacenza, has published the tender for the awarding of the renovation works of the Ro-Ro (roll-on/roll-off) docks, intended for the embarkation and disembarkation of wheeled vehicles.
The strategic objectives of the intervention
«The intervention – we read in a note – represents a further piece of the overall development strategy of the Calabrian port, aimed at adapting the port infrastructures to the evolution of international maritime traffic, to the use of increasingly larger ships and to the new needs of the global logistics market, strengthening the competitiveness and infrastructures of Gioia Tauro dedicated to rolling traffic».
Costs, times and specialization of the sectors
The project, worth 5,615,655 euros, envisages that the works will last 210 days and “contributes to consolidating the distinction between the sectors dedicated to container traffic and those intended for the automotive sector”. A planning choice that will allow us to accompany the growth of Ro-Ro traffic, supported both by the increase in connections with North Africa regarding the terminal operator MedCenter Container Terminal, and by the progressive development of the international automotive sector managed by Automar Spa.
The statements of the president Paolo Piacenza
The president of the Authority, Paolo Piacenza, explains that «we continue with determination the path of modernization, strengthening and specialization of the port of Gioia Tauro. This is a strategic work that will further increase the operational efficiency of the port, reducing port operations times with higher safety standards. At the same time, the creation of the new infrastructures will contribute to strengthening the functional separation between the container and automotive sectors, creating the conditions for increasingly efficient management of port spaces and for a further increase in volumes handled.
The results achieved in recent months, both in the automotive sector and in container connections – concludes President Piacenza – confirm the validity of the planning started by the Port System Authority. We continue to invest in modern, sustainable and competitive works, capable of attracting new traffic, generating economic development and employment and consolidating Gioia Tauro’s role as one of the main logistics and intermodal hubs in the Mediterranean and Europe.”
