Two photocopy shots, carried out a few days apart with the use of powerful explosive charges, had yielded a record haul of over 200 thousand euros. Today, months later, the investigations into the double attack on the Postamat in Cassano allo Ionio and Laino Borgo have reached a decisive turning point: the carabinieri of the Castrovillari Company and the Cassano station have arrested one of the alleged members of the commando who went into action in December 2025.
This is a young man of Apulian origins, already known to the police, who received a precautionary custody order in prison issued by the investigating judge of the Castrovillari Court at the request of the local Public Prosecutor’s Office. The charges against him are multiple aggravated theft and illegal possession of explosives.
The shots with the “marmot” technique
The criminal sequence dates back to the last part of 2025: The first raid took place on the night of December 23rd in Lauropoli, a hamlet of Cassano all’Ionio, earning the criminals around 135,000 euros. The second attack occurred six days later, on the night of December 29th in Laino Borgo, where the group had taken possession of over 80,000 euros.
In both episodes the operating methods were identical: a commando with a distorted face used high-potential homemade explosive devices – the so-called “marmots” – inserted into the cracks of the Italian Post Office’s ATMs to gut the armored boxes and escape with the cash before help arrived.
The investigations and the turning point
The capillarity of the control services across the territory and the detailed analysis of the video surveillance images have allowed the Carabinieri to reconstruct the movements of the criminals along the province of Cosenza. The cross-referencing of information-investigative data has made it possible to tighten the circle around the young man from Puglia, gathering a solid circumstantial framework against him.
The investigations are now continuing under the direction of the Castrovillari Prosecutor’s Office to trace the identity of the accomplices and definitively close the circle on the entire gang.
