«The negotiation process is in a phase in which a package that has developed on three parallel levels is being consolidated. It is clearly an extremely complex negotiation, which in order to reach completion can only ignore Russia’s desire to contribute to the negotiation process in a fair, credible and constructive manner. Unfortunately, to date everything seems to indicate that this desire has not yet matured. The continuous bombings in Ukraine demonstrate this.”

Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said this in the Chamber in her communications ahead of the European Council on 18 and 19 December.

“We must avoid the collapse of Kiev”

– We must avoid the collapse of Kiev, «we are called to make choices that require responsibility», «the security of Europe is at stake». “We have not endorsed any decisions on the use of Russian assets,” the prime minister said. «We need a sustainable solution. The decision will be made by the leaders,” the prime minister said. “We need a solid legal basis,” he adds. «No retaliation on national budgets».

“Italy does not intend to send soldiers to Ukraine”

For security guarantees to Ukraine there is among other things “the hypothesis of deployment of a Ukrainian multinational force led by the willing with the voluntary participation of the countries: I take this opportunity to reiterate that Italy does not intend to send soldiers to Ukraine”. Thus, the Prime Minister further remarked.

“Russia is bogged down”

It is important to “maintain pressure on Russia” which, unlike what the propaganda says, “has become bogged down – continued Meloni – in a very harsh war of position at the cost of enormous sacrifices. This difficulty is the only thing that can force Moscow to an agreement.”
