Franco Corbelli, Leader of the Civil Rights Movementintervenes after the words of the President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella, who denounced the social emergency of Italian prisons. “The president is right – says Corbelli – The situation is dramatic. Just look at the numbers: on 1 July 2025 there are 62,694 inmates in Italy against 46,719 places available, with a crowding rate of 134.19%. But the most alarming figure concerns suicides: 83 in 2024, the highest number of the last 30 years”.

In Calabria, according to the data released by the regional guarantor, in the first six months of 2024 there were 3 suicides, 80 attempted suicides, 225 deeds of self -harm and 75 physical aggressions, for a total of 5306 critical events. Corbelli recalls his commitment started in 1994 with the Foundation in Cosenza of the Committee for the rights of prisoners and the battles conducted throughout Italy, including international complaints such as that at the New York Times.

Among his strongest actions, the symbolic occupation of the Chamber in December 2005 to denounce the presence of children in prison with mothers, a problem that defines “still unsolved”. “30 years have passed unnecessarily – he concludes -. I hope that the government and Minister Nordio finally face this emergency with responses of justice, civilization and humanity”.
