Red onion of Tropea Calabria PGI, Gallo: “A growth that rewards the territory. We are on the right direction”

“The numbers are clear: the Red Cipolla di Tropea Calabria PGI is one of the success stories of Calabrian agriculture. In a few years, we have gone from a limited and not very organized production to a virtuous model of the supply chain, which today represents a economic, employment and identity value for our region”. Thus the regional councilor for agriculture, Gianluca Gallocomments the data that emerged during the Macfrut International Fair, one of the most important events in the fruit and vegetable chain, which photograph the rise of the Tropea red onion: from 10 thousand quintals produced in 2008 to over 380 thousand in 2022, with an increase in the surfaces grown from about 100 to 1,000 hectares and a triple of the number of companies belonging to the protection consortium.

“These results – continues the commissioner – are not the result of the case. They are the result of the determination of the producers, the growing awareness of the consumer and the work done on several levels to guarantee quality, traceability and promotion of the product. The Tropea red onion has become ambassador of Calabria in the world”.
Gallo also underlines the importance of regional programming: “We have invested with conviction in the strategic supply chains and in the enhancement of certified products. The red onion of Tropea PGI is a symbol of how much agriculture can create development, dignity of work and territorial identity”.

The Regional Department of Agriculture confirms the commitment to support the sector with measures for innovation, sustainability and internationalization: “This is the right direction. And we will continue to travel it together with the Calabrian producers.”
