“It wasn’t a punch, just an open-handed slap.” “It was crazy but I wasn’t the one who broke his nose.” “It’s not how everyone tells it.” This is how Vincenzo Loiero, former mayor of Grotteria, believed by all post-match reports to be the one who fractured the nose of a 17-year-old referee with his punch, justified himself in our interview published yesterday. Well, reading the statement released yesterday by the Calabria Regional Committee of the National Amateur League, yes, in fact it is not as everyone said: for Loiero it is much worse. Because the current minority municipal councilor of the village of Locride, in addition to having done what was attributed to him, lied and also accused a boy – even if not innocent – of the consequences of his action who was not as guilty as him.
The events that occurred in Cittanova at the end of the football match between the local junior team and Gioiosa Jonica of the same age are therefore clarified. The latter team – in which Loiero’s two sons play – was punished with a fine of 600 euros and above all relegated to last place in the standings (it was fourth, just one point behind the leading trio, it will continue to play but will not change its position).
