Rummary electoral climate in Lamezia Terme, where the center -right gathered in convention to support Roberto Occhiuto’s candidacy for the presidency of the Calabria Region. On stage, among the protagonists, Matteo Salvini, leader of the League, who opened his intervention with a joke addressed to the militants: “Make a applause that reaches the square … of the Schlein”.
Occhiuto’s speech, Salvini said, “excited” him, underlining that he warns the same enthusiasm and the same political climate in Calabria who, according to him, had brought the center -right to victory in the Marche.
There was no shortage of references to international current affairs and security: “On the war front we hope that the next few hours are decisive for international peace. But we are attentive to the next problem that we will have: Islamic extremism and fanaticism”. The leader of the League then claimed the hard line on migratory flows: “We blocked the landings of the illegal immigrants because we promised it. The left sent me to trial and on 11 December there will be the sentence of the Cassation: I risk six years in prison, but defending the borders is not a crime, it is a duty”.
Salvini also recalled the 22 billion euros already intended for Calabria in public works, calling them an investment “never seen before”. At the center of his intervention also the project of the bridge over the Strait of Messina, presented as a strategic and symbolic challenge: “The left does everything to disassemble this work, but I give you my word of honor: I will do everything because the bridge becomes reality. It will create 130 thousand jobs, it will be an opportunity for young people and a great operation against the ‘Ndrangheta. In 2025 we will open the construction sites and will not stop us”. Finally, Salvini launched a message of trust in view of the polls: “If in the Marche we have won with eight points ahead, on Monday evening we will tear the regional elections in Calabria”.
