The race for the renewal of the Metropolitan Council of Messina is in full swing. There are six sides that will compete for the seats in the Palazzo dei Leoni assembly in the elections on Sunday 27 July.
Taking to the field will be the Forza Azzurra lists for Città Metropolitana Messina, Fratelli d’Italia Giorgia Meloni, Grande Sicilia, Lega Salvini, Democratic Party and Sud Gioca Nord.
The operations of receiving and verifying the documents were coordinated by the electoral office, chaired by Andreina Mazzù (general secretary of the Municipality of Milazzo), assisted by her colleagues Carmela Caliò (Capo d’Orlando) and Maria Gabriella Crimi (Sant’Agata di Militello), with the functions of secretary entrusted to the manager of the Municipality of Messina, Salvatore De Francesco.
Once this phase is completed, the next institutional step is set for tomorrow afternoon with the public draw which will establish the progressive order of the symbols on the ballot paper.
Since these are second level elections, the polls will not be open to citizens: only the mayors and city councilors in office in the 108 Municipalities of the Messina area will vote, for a total of 1,272 eligible voters. The mechanism involves the weighted voting system, in which the “weight” of the preference expressed by each administrator varies based on the demographic segment of the population he represents.
The new Metropolitan Council will exercise crucial functions of direction and strategic planning on matters of a vast area, including territorial planning, roads, school buildings and local economic development.
