The background of the resignation of Occhiuto as president of the Calabria Region dates back to 11 June 2025, when he received a warranty notice from the Guardia di Finanza, as part of an investigation conducted by the Catanzaro prosecutor.
The main accusation is corruption, and concerns personal, politicians and business between Occhiuto and some figures of Calabria. The name of the greatest importance involved is Paolo Posteraro, former member of the Governor and today head of secretariat of the Undersecretary Matilde Siracusano, companion of Occhiuto. Among the other suspects, Ernesto Ferraro, president of Ferrovie della Calabria, also believed to be considered close to the governor.
Occhiuto’s reactions
Occhiuto himself called the warranty notice “an infamous thing, as if they had accused me of murder”. He declared himself ready to collaborate with the magistrates, asking to be listened to as soon as possible (also “in the dark”) because it would not be aware of the specific disputes against him. In July 2025 he was actually questioned for about five hours by the prosecutors of Catanzaro and said he was satisfied with the clarification provided, trusting in a quick storage of the accusations.
