Motion of the League in the Municipal Council of Messina for the granting of Grace to Mario Roggero, the jeweler convicted in the Court of Cassation for the events that occurred at his business, during a robbery that profoundly affected his personal and professional life.

Councilors Cosimo Oteri and Amalia Centofanti reiterate how article 87 of the Constitution attributes exclusively to the President of the Republic the power to grant pardons, as an individual act of clemency exercised according to the procedure established by law.

“We ask the City Council – say Oteri and Centofanti – to express a political direction and formulate an institutional appeal to the Head of State, within its prerogatives and according to the procedures established by law, to evaluate the possibility of granting a pardon to Mario Roggero. We believe it is essential – they add – to support those who live from their work and ask for greater protection for traders, artisans and traders who operate daily in contexts exposed to the risk of crime. The request for Grace does not constitute a challenge to the final sentence nor a judgment on the work of the judiciary, but an invitation to evaluate, within an institution established by the Constitution, the human, personal and social aspects of the matter”.
