The entrance gate of the Monastery of the Clarisse di Rossano. The only one in Calabria, and for centuries (more than 400 years) historical and significant presence not only of the Rossanese community, but of the entire territory.
Vivid is still the memory in many who have witnessed and participated in the procession that more than 40 years ago accompanied the nuns of the time at the headquarters of the new monastery where they continued their work of reception and prayer from behind the grates of the speakers. Today there are three of that group of nuns, all of an age, and in any case insufficient in number to keep the monastery of Villaggio S. Chiara open. The news had been circulating for some time and attempts were worth nothing to avoid the closure.
In fact, the Curia of Rossano-Cariati has communicated that, in recent days, Archbishop Maurizio Aloise was informed, by official letter sent by the “Santa Chiara d’Assisi” Federation of the Monache Clarisse Clarisse of Italy, of the painful decision to proceed with the closure of the “Santa Chiara” monastery, which stands in one of the most panoramic points of the Biza historic center.
The Federation has come to the conclusion that There are no longer the necessary conditions to keep the monastic community active. As mentioned, numerous attempts were put in place by Archbishop Aloise and the Federal Mother to preserve the presence of the Clarisse nuns who, for centuries, represented a lighthouse of faith, incessant prayer, welcome and charity for the entire Archdiocese. Over the years they have also distinguished themselves for the training given to young women, often orphans, not to mention the ancient arte production of the hosts and precious embroidery that still embellish the altars of the city churches.
