Schifani-Tajani, apparent truce for the Forza Italia supporters in Sicily: here’s what will happen

Antonio Tajani and Renato Schifani have signed an apparent truce, postponing the debate (euphemism) on the president’s re-nomination until at least January and putting aside the threat of imminent resignation and vote at the beginning of 2027. But Forza Italia remains a powder keg, made incandescent by the frontal attack that the president aimed at commissioner Nino Minardo. And none of the deputies believe that the meeting was as “serene” as the official notes tried to portray.
Therefore the legislature will not end, at least on this Tajani and Schifani shook hands. At the end of a meeting at the Farnesina in which the president obtained that Minardo would not participate. The Forzista regional commissioner was accused of having opened the case of Schifani’s re-nomination by embracing the line of part of the party despite the allies having already confirmed their trust in the president. Who now fears the attempt of Minardo, as well as Giorgio Mulè, to snatch his candidacy.
But Tajani would have glossed over all this, at least in official DC-First Republic style communications. Avoiding making official the president’s no to an encore but glossing over his long-term future. Schifani and Tajani will talk about it again in a subsequent meeting which does not yet have a date but which will not be before January. Until then nothing should happen, provided that no further shocks come from the prosecutors after the one involving Gaetano Armao and which alarmed the leaders of Forza Italia.
