“The North Atlantic Council meets this morning for an ordinary session and will discuss NATO’s response to drones who entered Poland overnight”. The spokesman for the alliance makes it known. “Numerous drones entered the Polish airspace during the night and were intercepted by the Polish and NATO aerial defenses. The secretary general is in contact with the Polish leadership and NATO is being careful with Poland”. The Atlantic Council, scheduled this morning in ordinary format as every Wednesday, instead he met under article 4 at the request of Poland. An ally diplomatic source confirms it to Ansa. Article 4 of the North Atlantic Treaty establishes that the member countries will consult each time whenever one of them believes that “their territorial integrity, political independence or security are threatened”.
What does NATO Art.4 provide
Based on the North -Atlantic Treaty, any member of the alliance consisting of 32 members can formally invoke article 4 to submit a question to the attention of the North Atlantic Council, the NATO decision -making organ. The article states: “The parties will consult whenever, in the opinion of one of them, territorial integrity, political independence or safety of any of the parties are threatened”. As soon as article 4 is invoked, the question is discussed and can potentially lead to some form of decision or joint action by NATO. Does not require any form of reinforced intervention. Unlike article 5, Sky News writes, he was invoked 7 times in the history of NATO. More recently, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Romania and Slovakia have asked to keep consultations pursuant to article 4 on February 24, 2022 in response to Vast Scala of Ukraine by Russia. Article 5 is instead a subsequent step and sanctions the principle that the allies intervene in defense if a NATO country is attacked based on collective self -defense. The rule states that “the parties agree that an armed attack against one or more of them in Europe or North America will be considered an attack on all parties”. So far it has been invoked only once so far, after the attacks of 11 September to the twin towers.
